Remembering Bernie Fuchs, Illustrator

I remember a Sports Illustrated article in the early eighties regarding the biggest fight of the decade between Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard. I have long forgotten the article, but I still remember the illustrations to this very day. That was thirty years ago and I recently tried to find some of those classic Fuchs’ paintings. Much of his work is found through a Google search, but none of the Leonard v. Hearns paintings. Luckily, Sports Illustrated has an entire archive, and I found the article and took some screen shots. On Growth: Being Old and Making Changes

The people who introduced me into this business have scattered in many directions. Some are in completely new industries, some retired, others are dinosaurs, while a few are just plain dead. I have a deep fear of the last two.

Over time, if a business is lucky enough to continue to exist, it will expand, contract and possibly reform into a new entity. It is difficult to gauge the severity of the changes, and grasp the timelines that measure the demise of once key services. Moving forward seems less complex, less emotional, and more procedural than knowing when to cut back. The problem doesn’t lie in conceptulizing new ideas; it is the retooling of the systems, procedures, hardware, and humans who perform the new service. Being a visionary is not imagining the future, it is building the fundamental process that enables that vision to be profitable. [Read more →]
