The program that we use for Font management is FontExplorer X, provided by an old name in the typographic industry, Linotype. We still use the free version that you can find here. I wanted a system that would allow a designer to find any kind of font they wanted within a few minutes, so I developed a series of categories consistent on each computer.
We have thousands of fonts in the office and yet each designer seems to work with a small group of san serif typefaces. I wanted to change that, and take the time out of choosing the correct font for the job.
Here is a screen shot of the categories we developed with FontExplorer.

Font Category Names
Each Category can have subcategories, such as I have done in the Script Fonts Category:

As each designer gathers new fonts to use, we can place it into the proper category, ready to use in the future. My hope is that we may break out of the status quo of font usage. A large library of fonts can only bring frustration if you have to spend hours looking for the perfect font and this simplifies it.
